Sun's longstanding president and chief operating officer, Ed Zander, has announced plans to retire.

Zander plans to hang up his hat on July 1, the beginning of Sun's financial year. His eventual destination remains unclear.

Scott McNealy, Sun's founder and chief executive, will take over Zander's duties from then and then are no immediate plans to appoint a replacement, Reuters reports.

In recent weeks, Sun chief financial officer Mike Lehman, head of computer systems John Shoemaker, and head of services Larry Hambly have all announced plans to leave, and Sun has reorganised its software division.

Zander, a pugnacious New Yorker, was (rather unfairly, we thought) put through the grille by financial analysts conference in San Francisco this week.

Analysts who asked then when he was quitting now have their answer. ®
