HP aims low with new NAS system

An SMB delight

Hewlett-Packard will add to the low-end of its storage line with a new network attached storage (NAS) storage system slated to be announced next week at Microsoft's Tech-Ed conference.

HP will roll out the StorageWorks NAS 1000s system, hoping to attract small and medium-sized businesses with low cost kit. HP has been Microsoft's most vocal backer in the storage market, and sure enough, the new product runs on the Windows SAK(Server Appliance Kit).

The new system is one of the most basic products offered by HP in the NAS space. It will cost $2,999 for 320GB of storage and stretch up to $6,999 for 1TB of capacity. SAK 2.1 will ship with the product until SAK 3.0 arrives later this year.

HP hopes SMB users will pick up the NAS 1000s to handle every day storage tasks and is looking for larger companies to use the system at remote offices.

The company also plans to roll out a Linux-based NAS 1000s system by 2004. ®
